This fits the pre 188 series Ruger Mini 14, i.e. the older common models. It fits over the front sight (requiring the longer, narrower slot cut found on this item). THIS DOES NOT FIT THE NEWER/CURRENT MODELS.
You must knock out the sight pin with a punch or you can cut the point off of a nail and use it to tap the pin through. (Save this pin in case you are unhappy with the brake). Then slide the brake on. You might need to tap it down with a rubber mallet. Line the brake pin slot up with the sight pin hole and insert the provided pin. This is where I dropped a star off the rating because the pin does not fit snug enough for my standards. However, this can be remedied by applying "Lock-Tite" and then tapping the brake down the barrel a fraction more pushing it against the slot pin.
The performance frankly is only marginally improved by the brake, but it is improved. Some people like these for the "military" appearance it gives the rifle. This is fine, but take note that this is a black matte and the barrel is "blued". There is a difference. My classic walnut with blue still looks good with the brake, and I am quite happy with this addition.
Everything aligns good but the problem is with the supplied pin, it is too small. Why is this still a problem? This would be an easy install if the correct pin is supplied.
